Always See The Glass Half Full!

Your job search is a sales process so you will experience frustration, rejection and disappointments. It is so important to view these setbacks as lessons or opportunities to improve your job search techniques.

If you are not scheduling interviews, it may be time to review and possibly adjust your job targets or career path. This could result in more interviews and a new fulfilling career.

If you don't interview well, practice answering the difficult questions like "Tell me About Yourself" and "Why did you leave your last job?" These questions are commonly asked and being prepared will help you ace your next interview.

If your questions did not reveal the challenges or preferences of the hiring authority, rewrite the questions you will ask. The purpose of your questions is to reveal what is most important to this particular hiring authority so you can position yourself as their solution.

The job market is improving, job offers are being made and if you stay positive and continue to improve your job search efforts, you will begin to enjoy results and obtain a job offer or offers!

You attitude greatly impacts the level of success you will enjoy throughout your job search. See the cup half full and expect to succeed at identifying and landing your dream job!

Time IS on your side!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTIt is important for you to realize that many companies are motivated to spend their hiring budgets before year end.  At the beginning of the year, companies set a budget for hiring and many companies have not spent their budgeted amount.  If they don't spend their hiring budgets in 2011, their hiring budget for 2012 may be reduced, which of course is not in their best interest.  This is why you will see many companies motivated to hire!

This is the perfect time for you to put momentum behind your search! Re-contact everyone in your network, re-contact every company where you have interviewed on your own and not through a recruiter, and double your direct marketing efforts.  This will put new life into your job search.  Timing is so important in a job search and the time to succeed is NOW!

MUST READInformational interviews can lead to job interviews and they also add people to your professional network.  Go to our Career Portal Home Page and click on Search &
Connect
, then click Step #3 - Schedule, then click on the Informational Interview tab and read "The Positive Impact of an Informational Interview" and "Why Are Informational Interviews so Effective?"

TIP FOR THE WEEK If gatekeepers are preventing you from speaking to hiring authorities, ask for Accounts Payable.  Most likely, your call will get transferred with no questions asked because the gatekeeper will assume they owe you money.  Typically, people in the Accounts Payable Department are very customer service oriented and will not only forward your call they will often give you the direct line, names and titles that you are seeking.  They tend to be very detail oriented, which works in your favor!

No One Calling You Back?

It can be very frustrating not to be called back.  However, there could be a valid reason. Too often you call and ask for information that is important to you.  The hiring authority does not see the benefit to them to call you back.

Rather than asking for an update, offer to provide them with additional information.  Instead of asking a question, offer new solutions to their problems.  Instead of an email, send them additional positive references.  Instead of asking for information, send samples of your work.
  • Hiring authorities will call you back if they see the benefit to them.
  • Hiring authorities will call you back if they think you will make them look good.
  • Hiring authorities will call you back to obtain additional information.
Leave a different message and you WILL be called back!

Bullseye!

CAREER ADVISOR - October 20, 2011
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTIs it time to consider a different target for your search? Before you consider changing your target, it's important to review your efforts in your current target. If you have only utilized job boards and websites, your target may still offer opportunities, you've just been focused on the two resources that have the most competition.

You may want to consider a new target if you have done the all of the following:
  • I have sent my resume directly to hiring authorities in my targeted companies
  • I have set up numerous informational interviews within my target
  • I have attended job fairs and networking events
  • I have followed up my mailed resumes with telephone calls
  • I have networked with all past co-workers, employers and supervisors
  • I have contacted the Professional Associations that represent my target
  • I have followed up on leads contained in Trade Publications for my target
  • I have dedicated at least 35 hours a week to my Job Search
If you have not done everything listed above, then focus on completing those areas before you walk away from your specific job targets.

If you have done everything listed above, then it may be time to go back into our Career Portal, click on PREPARE and complete the six steps within this first phase of a job search.

MUST READ Often the discussion of salary can result in you being screened out early in the interview process. Read the article "How Do You Handle Salary?" in the Career Portal Library. This advice will help you navigate the often uncomfortable discussion about the salary you desire.
